PRIDE: A Disability Studies Curriculum for Grades K-12

The Vermont Statewide Independent Living Council (SILC) is pleased to announce the completion of a K-12 curriculum called PRIDE (Promoting Respect and Inclusion through Disability Studies Education).

We have begun our pilot implementation program in Vermont schools. If you are interested in identifying specific classrooms for participation, please let us know. In addition, we encourage educators and community partners in other states to implement PRDE in their communities.

PRIDE ...
  • Is a concise, clear and comprehensive learning tool
  • Includes standards-based lessons that may be readily infused into the general curriculum
  • Includes individual and group problem solving exercises and research activities
  • Encourages students to explore community resources and develop project management skills
  • Encourages the development of skills necessary to recognize and prevent future discrimination
  • Explores the history and future of the Disability Civil Rights Movement
  • Challenges students and teachers alike to reevaluate potentially limiting attitudes

We look forward to working with the Vermont and National education community on this important project. Your comments and participation are most welcome.

PRIDE is available in download, disc, or hard copy format. The hard copy format is available for $32. The disc copy is free to Vermont residents and $5 for out-of-state shipping.
